Setting up a Facebook “Page” (Newbies Post)

I have a lot of friends that are artists, or have their own business that they would like to promote. Setting up a Facebook “Page” is an easy way to get the word out (and it’s free!). It’s also a great way to share your business info, and gain followers that can turn into customers or colleagues!

This is a beginner’s step-by-step instruction on setting up a Facebook Page.

You can also find a box in the upper right hand corner of someone else’s Page that says “Create a Page”.

Some categories have different options you can enter, so if your business can fall under different categories, check each one of them out to see what information you can enter. You can also change the category later if you need to under Edit Profile- Basic Information.

Enter your business information, agree to the terms, and Get Started!

You will then go through these 3 boxes above. If you have a logo for your business this is where you want to put it!

When done, make sure you invite friends! Tell them to suggest your page to their friends, and be sure to share some of your work, tips, business info, specials or anything else your customers would like to hear from you!

Once you get 25 “likes”, you can choose a username for your page (you can find this under Edit Page, Basic Information) and direct people to your Facebook Page using that url- like www.facebook.com/FlourishSocialMedia

Also, be sure you read the terms on Facebook. You can make a decision on how much and what to share.

If you have a website, be sure to send your viewers to your Facebook Page also!

Facebook Chatting- Public or Private? (Newbies post)

Have you wondered if you can talk with someone in private on Facebook? Yes you can! There are several ways to go about it. Below are a few screen shots to show you how.

You can go to your friend’s profile page, there you will see a message box you can click on, or the chat box on the bottom. Facebook recently made some changes and they are connected. If you use the chat box at the bottom and your friend is not online, it will automatically send them a message to read later. If they are online you can chat back and forth.

You can tell if your friends are online by the green squares or dots. You can see these on your News Feed/home page. Two different options below:

You can access the sidebar by clicking the “chat” bar at the bottom, and hide it by clicking on the took symbol and clicking “hide sidebar”.

Facebook Fear?!?…(for Facebook newbies)

Are you constantly getting email invitations from friends to join Facebook? Are you missing events or invitations because everyone uses Facebook and you don’t?

There is no reason to fear, as long as you are smart about it, and your security settings are done right. It is true that Facebook seems to spring changes on you, then you have to go and change settings, but usually the word gets out and there is plenty of help telling you how to do it.

One of the things I hear most “I don’t want to be friends with people I barely knew in high school!” or “All these random people now want to be my friend!”. You don’t HAVE to accept everyone that asks you as your friend. Depends on what your purpose is to use Facebook, you can pick and choose. Yes, some people’s feelings may get hurt, but you should not feel obligated to be friends. I feel that if you are uncomfortable with what you will post (because of who your friends are) it will not be enjoyable for you to participate and share. If you feel that you “should” be friends with some people, there are ways to customize your settings so that your posts, check-ins or photos will not be seen by certain people. If you have heard that some people have gotten viruses on their computer because of Facebook it could be certain “apps” that have been going around. The big one going around a while back was something like “Do you know who has been searching for you?”. The best thing to do is not to click on any of those type of apps, games, etc. If in doubt, do not click on it!

Spend some time looking at the account settings and see what’s there. If you spend a little time getting familiar with it, it will not seem so overwhelming.

I have thought about doing this for quite sometime. This first post is a brief introduction to my experience with Social Media. I first started playing around with Social Media on Twitter, just to see what it was all about. Before I knew it I had a Facebook page and a daily photo blog! I read almost everything I can get my hands on and have used Social Media to promote my Art and Photography, as well as promote the art group I belong to. I would like to thank my friends that encouraged me to do this. I had numerous people ask me to help them set up their Twitter, Facebook and Blogs, and told me I should do this.

One thing I have really learned, or gotten from Twitter, is “community”. Yes, it may sound silly, but you follow people with common interests, you learn from each other, encourage each other, and before you know it feels like you do know them. My philosophy on “following”, is not to follow everyone. I feel the best way to do it, is find people with like interests, hobbies, businesses. Also add to the mix friends and family, and just fun people that you would not mind seeing their posts. There are lots of inspirational people out there, it’s kind of nice to get that great quote when you really need it! Also Twitter is a great place to get breaking news, so a few of those are good to follow.

This blog, along with my Facebook page will be evolving in the next few weeks, so please excuse the “construction”!
